Monferrato (wine)

Monferrato DOC is a guaranteed designation of origin for Italian red or white wines from the area around Asti , Piedmont. The area of ​​Monferrato is considered to be the origin of viticulture in Piedmont, which is proven by numerous finds such as amphorae and tools. The regulations on cultivation zones, grape varieties and the expansion of wines were last published on March 7, 2014.

There are several types of wine that are allowed:

  • "Monferrato rosso" (red blended wine for which the grape varieties to be used are not prescribed. They only have to be approved in Piedmont.)
  • "Monferrato bianco" (White blended wine for which the grape varieties to be used are not prescribed. They only have to be approved in Piedmont.)
  • "Monferrato Chiaretto (or Ciaret)" rosé wine: at least 85% Barbera and / or Bonarda and / or Cabernet Franc and / or Cabernet Sauvignon and / or Dolcetto Freisa and / or Grignolino and / or Pinot nero and / or Nebbiolo individually or together; A maximum of 15% other grape varieties permitted in Piedmont may be added.
  • “Monferrato Dolcetto” red wine: at least 85% Dolcetto ; A maximum of 15% other red grape varieties permitted in Piedmont may be added.
  • “Monferrato Freisa”: red wine: at least 85% Freisa ; A maximum of 15% other red grape varieties permitted in Piedmont may be added.

  • Taste : dry, balanced, fruity, pleasantly bitter

  • Acidity : at least 5.5 g / l
