Albugnano is an Italian commune in the province of Asti in the Piedmont region . 500 (as of December 31, 2019) residents live in an area of ​​nine square kilometers.

The municipality is located about 35 kilometers north of Asti and 20 kilometers east of Turin at an altitude of 549 m and is also often referred to as the balcony of Monferrato .

Abbazia Santa Maria di Vezzolano

The Romanesque Abbazia Santa Maria di Vezzolano stands in a valley about a kilometer outside the village . The complex, the origin of which is said to go back to the eighth century, is documented as an Augustinian monastery from 1095 and was completed by the beginning of the 13th century. The abbey church, built in 1189, was planned as a three-aisled basilica with originally three apses . It has a richly decorated facade in which brick alternates with natural stone. In the center of three superimposed blind arcades stands the blessing Christ, flanked by the archangels Michael and Raphael. In the tympanum of the portal Mary sits on the throne, on her right the dove of the Holy Spirit . Inside, a 12th century rood screen shows the coronation, death and ascension of Mary in two rows of reliefs , including the kings of Judah . The south aisle of the church was included in the cloister , which is decorated with frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries.
