Roccaverano (in Piedmontese Rocavran ) is a municipality with 382 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Asti (AT), Piedmont region .
geography
Roccaverano is located in the Langa Astigiana , a promontory that stretches between the Bórmida di Millésimo and Bórmida di Spigno rivers before their confluence with the Bórmida . The place is the highest in the province of Asti.
Neighboring municipalities are Bubbio , Cessole , Denice , Loazzolo , Mombaldone , Monastero Bormida , Olmo Gentile , San Giorgio Scarampi , Serole , Spigno Monferrato and Vesime .
history
Roccaverano was first mentioned as Ruspaverano when Otto I handed over the place Aleramo von Monferrato . However, the place has certainly been populated since ancient times. The name derives from Rocha Uverani , that is, a castle (Rocca) over the Ovrano river.
The descendants of Aleramos, the del Carretto family, owned the place from 1209 as a fief of the city of Asti . Their castle also dates from this time. In 1673 Roccaverano finally fell to Savoy after several changes of ownership . The residents lost all the freedoms they had been granted since the Carretto. It was occupied by the French in 1715 and by the Spanish in 1744, which accelerated the castle's decline.

Attractions
- On the highest peak of the Langa Astigiana, the del Carretto had built their castle, of which only the almost 30 meter high keep and part of the facade of the palace with three Romanesque biforic windows remain.
- The parish church dell 'Assunta (1509-16) is a central building in the style of the early Renaissance , which cannot deny the influence of Bramante . The choir was lengthened in baroque style in 1827 .
- In the district of Vengore there is a mighty Gothic defense tower that was built to protect the city of Acqui in the 14th century.
- In the cemetery church of Vengore, San Giovanni Battista, the Langhe's most extensive Gothic fresco cycle has been preserved. They were created at the end of the 15th century by an anonymous painter known as the Master of Roccaverano.
Typical products
The place gave its name to Robiola di Roccaverano , a cream cheese made from raw goat's milk that is protected by the DOP seal of origin . Slow Food's first support group was founded to preserve the cheese . The berries of the Pinot Noir and / or Chardonnay grape varieties can be used to make Alta Langa sparkling wine . Roccaverano also cultivates vines of the Barbera variety for the Barbera d'Asti , a red wine with DOCG status, as well as for the Barbera del Monferrato .
