The Bormida ( Bormia in Piedmontese language ) is a river around 150 kilometers long in the Liguria and Piedmont regions in northwestern Italy .

From the eastern Bormida di Spigno , which marks the borderline between the Alps and the Apennines , and the more western Bormida di Millesimo , which rises on the north side of the Ligurian Alps , the Bormida forms after their confluence west of Acqui Terme . This also flows steadily in a north-easterly direction, and after about 64 kilometers shortly before the confluence with the Tanaro, near Alessandria, near the municipality of Pietra Marazzi, the waters of its tributary Orba take up.

In the battle of Marengo , a place not far from the confluence, the Bormida was the scene of a river crossing in 1800 and a later retreat by the Austrians involved.
