Barbera d'Alba

Barbera d'Alba is an Italian red wine from the hills around the city of Alba ( province of Cuneo ) in the Piedmont region . The wine has had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1970 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

Approved vineyards are in the province of Cuneo in the municipalities of Alba , Albaretto della Torre , Barbaresco , Barolo , Borgomale , Camo , Canale , Castagnito , Castellinaldo , Castiglione Falletto , Castiglione Tinella , Castino , Corneliano d'Alba , Cossano Belbo , Diano d ' Alba , Govone , Grinzane Cavour , Guarene , Magliano Alfieri , Mango , Monforte d'Alba , Montelupo Albese , Monticello d'Alba , Neive , Neviglie , Novello , Perletto , Piobesi d'Alba , Priocca , Rocchetta Belbo , Roddi , Roddino , Rodello , Santo Stefano Belbo , Santa Vittoria d'Alba , Serralunga d'Alba , Sinio , Treiso , Trezzo Tinella , Verduno and Vezza d'Alba and in parts of the municipalities of Baldissero d'Alba , Bra , Cortemilia , Cherasco , La Morra , Monchiero , Montà , Montaldo Roero , Monteu Roero , Narzole , Pocapaglia , Santo Stefano Roero and Sommariva Perno .

In 2016, 86,479 hl of DOC wine were produced on a total of 1238 hectares.

Production regulations

The Barbera d'Alba is about 85 to 100% from the grape Barbera grapes. The grape variety Nebbiolo may be added in a proportion of 0–15%. A minimum expansion period is only required for the Barbera d'Alba Superiore . This must be stored for 12 months - of which at least four months in wooden barrels - before it can be marketed. After a few qualitative difficulties, the wines have been reliably good again since the 1980s.
