history

City map of the historic old town

Canale was founded in 1260 by the free city of Asti after the defeat of the Counts of Biandrate. Asti then banished the bishop's lords of the castle, who had previously shared the property, from the parish. The population moved from various villages in the area, such as B. Anterisio, Loreto di Canale, Castelletto d'Astisio and other smaller towns there. Canale was laid out in the typical construction of this time as "Villanova" with right-angled streets and arcades, comparable to Villanova d'Asti .

After that, Canale had a checkered history: In 1387 Canale became part of the Visconti County . This transferred the village to the Orléans as part of a dowry . In 1530 the rule was ceded to the House of Savoy .

By decree of the President of the Republic, on the recommendation of the Ministry of the Interior, on July 27, 2011, Canale was given the title “City”.

economy

The Campari Group operates two factories for the Campari and Aperol brands in Canale (Frazione Valpone) .

At the beginning of the 20th century, in response to phylloxera, the enormous hail damage of 1906, and other severe damage that had weakened viticulture, agriculture turned to growing peaches . During these years the reputation of the "Canale peach" arose - with a daily market and a production volume that could be sold throughout the country and also exported across borders. Currently, peach cultivation is being largely reduced in favor of a new concept of agriculture based on viticulture, with an emphasis on the Arneis grape variety, from which the famous Roero Arneis DOCG white wine is made. The Barbera and Nebbiolo grape varieties are also grown.

Community partnerships

Canale has partnerships with the French community of Rodilhan (since 1971) and with the Baden-Württemberg community of Sersheim (since 1984).
