Manta (in Piedmontese La Manta ) is a municipality with 3820 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Cuneo (CN) in the Italian region of Piedmont .

geography

Manta is on the edge of the Cottian Alps at the exit of the Valle Varaita . It is 59 km south of Turin , 30 km north of Cuneo and 4 km south of Saluzzo .

Manta is on the Savigliano – Saluzzo – Cuneo railway line . It is connected to the trunk road network via the state road SS 589 dei Laghi di Avigliana , which runs along the edge of the Alps.

The neighboring municipalities are Lagnasco , Pagno , Saluzzo and Verzuolo .

history

In the 10th century, Benedictines founded a monastery, of which the church of Santa Maria del Monastero is still preserved today. The village developed around the monastery.

In 1175 Manta became a fiefdom of the Margraviate of Saluzzo . Margrave Tommaso I built a castle on the foundations of an older fortress. Tommaso III. bequeathed it to his illegitimate son Valerano in 1416, who expanded it into his representative residence. In 1548 Manta came to France and 1601 to Savoy .
