Bergolo ( Piedmontese Bèrgoj ) is a municipality with 56 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Cuneo (CN), Piedmont region . It is 95 km southeast of Turin and 79 km northeast of Cuneo .

Bergolo lies on a ridge of the Alta Langa between the Bórmida valley and the Uzzone valley.

The neighboring municipalities are Cortemilia , Levice , Pezzolo Valle Uzzone and Torre Bormida .

history

The place has probably been inhabited since ancient times. The name Bergulum comes from late Latin and means place of the heather . The first mention of it comes from 1091 when the village became the property of Bonifacio del Vasto . In 1532 Bergolo came into the possession of the Savoy and remained there until the end of the monarchy. After the decline due to strong emigration since the end of the Second World War , the place has experienced a boom again as an artist and tourist destination since the 1990s.

Culinary specialties

Viticulture is practiced to a limited extent near Bergolo. The berries of the Pinot Noir and / or Chardonnay grape varieties can be used to make Alta Langa sparkling wine .

Parish Church of Natività di Maria Vergine
  • The parish church of Natività di Maria Vergine dates from the 17th century.
  • The San Sebastiano chapel is located above the village, with an impressive view of the Alps, surrounded by the cemetery. It is a simple, but proportionally perfect, Romanesque building from the 12th century, probably 1145.
  • As a result of the annual art competitions, pictures and mosaics hang permanently on numerous facades.
