Oncino is a municipality with 82 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Italian province of Cuneo (CN), Piedmont region . It is located on the upper reaches of the Po, about 55 km southwest of Turin .

The municipality has been a member of the mountain community Comunità Montana Valli Po, Bronda e Infernotto since ~ 2006 , which was expanded in 2008 to Comunità Montana Valli Po, Bronda, Infernotto e Varaita .

The place is about 1200 m above sea level in the mountainous upper part of the Valle Po , about 10 km as the crow flies from the sources of the Po in the Cottian Alps .

It is located in a short side valley about 1 km south of the main valley, which is partly wooded here. The Strada Statale 662 (SS 622 or "Via Valle Po") runs on the north side near the neighboring town of Ostana and leads to the western mountains or east via Paesana and Saluzzo to Turin.

The municipality covers an area of ​​46 km² . The neighboring municipalities are Casteldelfino , Crissolo , Ostana , Paesana , Pontechianale and Sampeyre .

Population development

After a peak at the turn of the century , the population fell dramatically by over 90 percent. It is doubtful whether investments in tourism (especially in Crissolo ) can stop the migration.
