history

Some of the rock carvings above Verzuolo could go back to the Bronze Age (2200-900 BC). They probably belong to the same era as the ones at RocceRé in the Mairatal.

In 1068 the name of the village appears for the first time in a deed of donation. 1159 Bishop was Charles I, Archbishop of Turin, by Emperor Frederick I curtem de Verciolo cum Castelli et turribus et districto . On October 2, 1165, Robaldo and Bartolommeo, the sons of Tidino de Monte Rossetto , gave the property to Manfredo di Saluzzo. This in turn appointed them as masters of the area.

Fort tower from 1377; it originated on ruins of the 11th century

In 1377 the Castello di Verzuolo , which still exists today, was built on the ruins of the previous castle destroyed by Federico II. Di Saluzzo. In 1389 he had one dedicated to St. Michael build a church consecrated. In 2016 the owners, the Barbiellini Amidei family, wanted to sell the castle. After the Waldensian community was destroyed, a mission of the Capuchin Order was set up in 1602 .

In 1565 there were massive attacks by the Waldensians in Verzuolo as well , while these were to be driven out by a merger of the Catholic Savoy and French. The Catholics were expelled from the village on September 3, 1565, Giovanni Bunis was killed instantly, but Giovanni Maero was previously tortured. Both were thrown dead in the river. September 3rd was later made a public holiday after the Waldensians were driven out.

At least since the end of the 18th century there was a market that took place every Tuesday. In order to protect themselves militarily against France, Savoy fortified the valleys and built roads so that heavy equipment, such as cannons, could be brought in quickly or moved between the valleys. The old road led from Manta to Verzuolo until the beginning of the 18th century through today's road to Pinerolo , where there was a barracks that led towards Saluzzo and on to Cuneo .

In 1854, 215 filatoi (spinners) worked in the village with its 3,415 inhabitants in the local yarn industry, spread over eight spinning mills and three spinning machines. The silk produced there in three factories was mainly offered in Turin. The cattle of the valley, but also grain, were sold in the Saluzzo and Villafalletto markets .

On October 24, 1880, a railway stopped in Verzuolo for the first time , with a maximum speed of 25 km / h, with the station at the time at the crossroads of the Falicetto road , immediately after entering Verzuolo on the right. The station also received a telegraph station.

In the spring of 1899, the municipality signed a ten-year contract with Tommaso Toesca, in which the company was to provide electrical lighting in the town. The company founded for this purpose, made up of Toesca, Luigi Burgo and others, traded as Alimoda Burgo & C and was based at Mulin Cit . The system, powered by a small turbine , called Calzoni , made it possible to replace the kerosene lamps with 19 electric ones in 1902.
