Pontechianale ( Piedmontese Pontcianal , Occitan Pont e la Chanal ) is an Italian commune with 166 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Cuneo (CN) in the Piedmont region . The municipality covers an area of 95.7 km² .
The municipality is located in the upper Valle Varaita , the main town of Maddalena at the inlet of the Varaita river into the Lago Pontechianale reservoir , which was created by a dam built in 1942 near Castello. The municipality borders France to the west.
Fractions of the municipality are: Maddalena ( main town ), Castello, Villaretto, Rueite, Genzana, Forest and Chianale. Chianale is a member of the I borghi più belli d'Italia association (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).
The neighboring municipalities are Bellino , Casteldelfino , Crissolo , Molines-en-Queyras ( F ), Oncino , Abriès-Ristolas with Ristolas , Saint-Paul and Saint-Véran ( F ).
