Ostana is a small, alpine Italian municipality with 89 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Cuneo (CN) in the Piedmont region and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy). The municipality is located on the upper reaches of the Po , about 55 km southwest of Turin .

The community has been a member of the Comunità Montana Valli Po, Bronda e Infernotto mountain community since 2006 .

geography

The place is about 1200 m above sea level in the mountainous upper part of the Valle Po , about 10 km as the crow flies from the sources of the Po in the Cottian Alps .

It lies on the north side of the main valley, which is partially wooded here. The “ Via Valle Po ” (Strada Statale 662) runs down the river and leads to the western high mountains and east via Paesana and Saluzzo to Turin.

The neighboring municipalities are Crissolo , Oncino and Paesana in the Po Valley and, beyond the northern mountain range, Bagnolo Piemonte and Barge in the Val Pellice .

The municipality of Ostana covers an area of approximately 16 km² .

Population development

The town of Ostana has recorded a constant, comparatively rapid loss of population since 1921. The highest population to date of 1187 (as of 1921) fell to 68 (as of 2006). In terms of proportion, this corresponds to a population loss of over 93 percent within 80 years. Newer investments in tourism (also in Crissolo) should counteract this.
