The Cottian Alps ( Kottische Alpen , French Alpes cottiennes , Italian Alpi Cozie ) are a mountain group of the western Alps in the border area between Italy and France (see also Occitania ).
Like the Roman province of Alpes Cottiae , it owes its name to the Ligurian prince Cottius , ruler of the Segusio ( Susa ) region. Cottius did not oppose the Roman campaign carried out by Augustus to subjugate the Alpine peoples (13 BC), but submitted without a fight.
geography
The Cottian Alps are separated from the Graian Alps in the north by the Maurienne , the Arc , the Col du Mont Cenis pass and the Dora Riparia . In the west they are separated from the Dauphiné Alps by the Valoloirette , the Guisane and the Durance valley. In the southwest, after the Ubaye, come the Provençal Prealps . In the south, beyond the Ubayette , the Col de Larche and the Stura di Demonte, the Maritime Alps and the Ligurian Alps in the southeast .
The Italian part of the Cottian Alps belongs to the northern Italian region of Piedmont . Has a share in them
- the metropolitan city of Turin with the Susa valley , the Val Chisone (French: Val Cluson) and Germanasca valley , further to the south the Val Sangone and Val Pellice
- the province of Cuneo with the almost parallel valleys of the Valle Po (upper reaches of the Po ), the Valle Varaita and Valle Maira as well as the Grana and Stura valleys.
The French part of the Cottian Alps belongs to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region .
The highest peak is the 3841 meter high Monte Viso (Monviso) on the Italian side .
