The entrance on the Italian side

The Buco di Viso (fr. Le Pertuis du Viso ) is a 75 m long tunnel connecting France and Italy in the Cottian Alps , which was built between 1479 and 1480. This makes it the oldest traffic tunnel in the Alps.

It is named after Monte Viso ( 3841  m ), the dominant mountain in the region, a little to the south , and runs at an altitude of 2882  m below the Colle delle Traversette ( 2950  m ).

Margrave Ludwig II of Saluzzo had the tunnel, about three meters wide and two meters high, broken through to facilitate trade on the Via del Sale between Provence and the Po Valley.

This tunnel is still accessible for hikers today, for example on the “Blue Path” of Via Alpina or on the Giro del Monviso route , which leads around the striking rock pyramid in two days.
