Giro di Viso
The Giro di Viso ( Giro del Monviso ) is a hiking trail on which you can walk around Monviso ( 3841 m slm ), the highest mountain in the Cottian Alps , in two to three days .
A good starting point is the Pian del Re plateau ( 2020 m ), which can be reached from Crissolo , where the source of the Po is located. The path first leads past Lake Fiorenza to the Rifugio Quintino Sella ( 2640 m ) on Lake Grande di Viso . Over the Passo Gallarino ( 2726 m ) and the Passo di Chiaffredo ( 2764 m ) you descend into the Vallone di Vallanta , where the ascent to the Rifugio Vallanta ( 2450 m ) begins. After crossing the Passo di Vallanta ( 2811 m ) you come to the Refuge du Viso ( 2460 m ), which is located in French territory. The following ascent leads to the Colle delle Traversette ( 2950 m ), the highest point of the tour. Shortly before the pass you can see the entrance to the Buco di Viso , a tunnel that was built as early as 1479/1480 and is considered the oldest tunnel in the Alps. On the Italian side of the Monviso massif, you can return to Pian del Re via Via del Sale .
history
The first documented tour around the Monviso was made by the Englishman David Forbes and a local guide. On July 1, 1839, the two climbed from the French Queyras , the region on the upper reaches of the Guil , to the Colle delle Traversette and within a day circled the Monviso group clockwise.
