The Queyras is a landscape in the Cottian Alps in the French department Hautes-Alpes of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region on the upper reaches of the Guil .

The Queyras consists of the Guil Valley above Guillestre and the Combe du Queyras gorge . In Queyras are the municipalities of Arvieux , Abriès , Aiguilles , Château-Ville-Vieille (consisting of the villages of Château-Queyras and Ville-Vieille), Molines-en-Queyras , Ristolas and Saint-Véran . In addition, contrary to geographical and historical logic, the municipality of Ceillac is now counted as Queyras, which is above Guillestre, but not above the gorge.

The Combe du Queyras between Guillestre and Château-Queyras is a narrow and picturesque gorge through which the valley access road D902 runs today. The only other road connections from Queyras are the pass roads over the Col d'Izoard to Briançon and over the Col d'Agnel into the Valle Varaita .

The Queyras is located west of the main Alpine ridge (which coincides with the Italian border) and east of the upper reaches of the Durance , in the west of which lies the Barre des Écrins mountain range , which is over 4000  m high . The smaller mountain ranges in the north and south of the Queyras also reach over 3000  m . Thanks to this sheltered location, the Queyras forms a distinct inner-alpine dry area.

In total, the Queyras comprises more than 20 three-thousand-meter peaks , including Pic de Rochebrune ( 3320  m ), Bric Froid ( 3302  m ), Grand Glaiza ( 3293  m ), La Grande Aiguillette ( 3284  m ), Cime de Chabrières ( 3246  m ), Cime de Clausis ( 3230  m ), Pic de Terre Noire ( 3100  m ), Pic de Foréant ( 3081  m ), Pic de Petit Rochebrune ( 3078  m ) and La Turge de la Suffie ( 3024  m ).

As a canton of the Federation of Briançon , the Queyras enjoyed political autonomy for a long time.

On January 31, 1977 the Queyras Regional Nature Park ( French: Parc naturel régional du Queyras ) was founded, which covers an area of around 57,400 hectares . The park administration is based in Arvieux , where the “Maison du Parc” is also located. In 2007, within the Natural Park to the west below the already Italy belonging Monte Viso who reported a 2,295 hectare special zone, Réserve naturelle nationale de Ristolas Monte Viso .

tourism

Pra Premier via ferrata

Tourism started late compared to other regions in the French Alps. This was due to the peripheral location and the resistance of the local population to major tourist projects. Against this background, hiking tourism as so-called “soft tourism” has developed most strongly. The Queyras is part of the network of long-distance hiking trails:

  • GR 58 (circular hiking trail in seven stages through the Queyras)

In addition, the following via ferratas have established themselves:

  • Pra Premier (Arvieux)
  • Crêtes de Combe la Roche (Arvieux)
  • Fort Queyras (Chateau Ville-Vieille)
  • Rochers de Clapière (Ceillac)
