The Guil is a white water river in France that runs in the Hautes-Alpes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region . It rises in the French part of the Cottian Alps from the small mountain lake Lac Lestio , on the northwest flank of the Pointe Gastaldi summit (3210 m), in the municipality of Ristolas , near the Italian border. It first drains to the northwest, then swings to the southwest and breaks in its course with a steep gradient through several sections of the gorge into the valley of the Durance , where it joins the Mont-Dauphin after 52 kilometers as a left tributary. On its way the river crosses the Queyras Regional Nature Park . A section of the river is dammed up by a reservoir to generate energy.
Touristic
The Guil is a white water kayak river with difficulties in the predominantly upper range of the white water difficulty scale . The most famous difficulties are the "Schlossgraben", a gorge-like breakthrough below the Château du Queyras, the " Combe du Queyras " with the "Guiltreppen" (see also the photo on the right, the so-called "Schleierfall") and the "Schlitz". The Guil is dammed to the northeast of Guillestre and is closed to traffic in the reservoir area. Below the reservoir, it is possible to drive up to the confluence with the Durance in the case of difficulties in the lower range of the whitewater difficulty scale, whereby the small gorge between Guillestre and Mont-Dauphin is well worth seeing.
Winter sports are practiced in the mountains of the upper reaches.
