The Federation of Briançon (also called Escartons du Briançon and Republic of Briançon ) was an amalgamation of municipalities in several upper valley regions on both sides of the main Alpine ridge around the Col de Montgenèvre in the Cottian Alps . The Briançon League, often referred to as the “Peasant Republic ”, existed from 1343 to 1713. Escart meant the distribution of rights and duties among the valleys with equal rights.
In 1343 representatives of the original four escartons acquired
- Briançon
- Queyras
- Oulx (Upper Susa Valley )
- Casteldelfino (upper Varaita valley with the side valleys of Bellino and Pontechianale )
von Humbert II , the Dauphin von Viennois , the manorial rights in these areas and established a self-government. France , to which the region passed in 1349, confirmed the privileges of the escartons. The fifth escarton was Pragelato , today's Val Chisone .
This union was maintained until 1713, when with the Treaty of Utrecht at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession the border was moved and Oulx , Casteldelfino and Pragelato Savoy were added.
