It rises in the French part of the Cottian Alps , on the municipal boundary of Villar-d'Arêne and Le Monêtier-les-Bains , near the Col du Lautaret mountain pass , and breaks in its course with a steep gradient into the valley of the Durance , where it in Urban area of Briançon flows into it as a right tributary. Touristic
The Guisane is a white water kayak river with varying difficulties. The upper course, which is closed to traffic as far as Le Casset, is in the upper range of the white water difficulty scale . The difficulties between Le Casset and Chantemerle are in the lower to medium range, with only one piece that is pleasing and blocked between Le Monêtier-les-Bains and Les Guibertes in the medium difficulty range. From the exit of Chantemerle the difficulties increase significantly up to a weir that is in itself inaccessible , then increase again in the area of the "forest gorge" and reach the upper range of the whitewater difficulty scale . Shortly before the confluence with the Durance in Briançon , the difficulty decreases significantly.
Winter sports are practiced in the mountains of the upper reaches.
