The Po Valley near Crissolo
The source of the Po: This is where the Po rises

The Po Valley is the name given to the upper reaches of the Po from the Cottian Alps to the point where it enters the Po plain .

The valley is located in the Italian province of Cuneo ( Piedmont region ) and politically belongs to the Comunità montana (community association) Valli Po, Bronda, Infernotto e Varaita . The valley communities are Crissolo , Oncino , Ostana , Paesana and Sanfront , as well as Rifreddo and Martiniana Po at the valley exit .

The Po Valley is only about 35 km long and runs almost in a straight line west-east from the main Alpine ridge (which here coincides with the French border) to the beginning of the Po plain . The valley exit is between the hills near Revello and Martiniana Po, about 8 km west of Saluzzo . Here the river turns north towards Turin.

Parallel valleys are the Val Pellice in the north and the Valle Varaita in the south. They are half as long as they only flow into the Po between Saluzzo and Turin.

Between the sources of the Valle Po and the Valle Varaita lies one of the most striking peaks in the Western Alps, the Monviso (Monte Viso) at 3841 m.
