The rocci melon from the Susa valley |
The Rocciamelone ( Piedmontese Rociamlon , French Rochemelon ) is located on the southern edge of the Graian Alps and towers over the city of Susa by about 3000 meters. This made it the highest mountain in the Alps for a long time .
The first ascent took place in the Middle Ages, on September 1, 1358, by Bonifacio Rotario d'Asti in the form of a pilgrimage as thanks for having escaped slavery among the Turks . In memory of the first climber, the refuge is called Rifugio Cà d'Asti at an altitude of 2854 m on the southern flank of the Rocciamelone (normal ascent) .
At the summit is now a statue of Mary and a chapel (with bivouac area), the highest in the Alps. The pilgrimage to the Madonna della Neve takes place every year on August 5th. For this purpose, the pilgrims carry a sack of sand from the hut to the summit. Pope John Paul II wrote a greeting to mark the centenary of the statue of Mary at the summit in 1999.
The three main (and easiest) access routes are from Bessans (F), Susa and Usseglio .
The summit is one of the easiest " three-and-a-half-thousanders " (cf. Barrhorn ) and therefore offers a view that mountain hikers can hardly reach anywhere else and encompasses large parts of the French Alps and the entire Lombard-Piedmontese Alpine arc - the Ligurian Alps over the Monte Viso ( Cottian Alps ) in the south over the Mont Blanc , the Gran Paradiso and the Monte Rosa in the north to the Bernina group and Adamello in the northeast.
