The Barrhörner are a double peak in the Valais Alps on the western side of the Mattertal . The Äussere Barrhorn ( Üssers Barrhorn , 3610  m above sea level ) is the higher of the two peaks, 750 meters south of it is the Inner Barrhorn ( Inners Barrhorn , 3583  m above sea level ). The Barrhörner are about three kilometers north of the Brunegghorn above St. Niklaus .

The western flank of the mountain is not glaciated and both peaks are accessible without ice equipment. From the peaks you have a good view of the Weisshorn , the Mischabel group with the cathedral , the Monte Rosa and the Bernese Alps with the Aletsch glacier .

The Äussere Barrhorn is considered to be the “highest mountain hiking mountain in Europe”. The summit of the Grande Sassière on the French-Italian border is 3751  m above sea level. M. is even higher and is even easier to reach from the road up to Val-d'Isère . The second highest "mountain hiking mountain" is probably the Rocciamelone (3538 m).

Routes

The next villages near the Barrhorn are St. Niklaus in Mattertal and Gruben / Meiden in Turtmanntal . The normal ascent from the Turtmannhütte (2519 m) takes three to four hours. The hut itself can be reached in two to three hours from Gruben. Depending on your choice, the path to the hut corresponds to the level of difficulty T1 to T2 + , the further path to the Barrhorn is T3.

The ascent from St. Niklaus leads over the Topalihütte (2674 m) and the Schölligletscher. Above the Schölligletscher, the path leads over a via ferrata, in some cases it has a fixed steel cable as a safety device (difficulty level T4). According to a hiking guide, the Schöllijoch is a T5 path with a steep snow slope, ropes and iron steps. The current condition of the Schölligletscher should be requested from the hut warden. The tour times are St. Niklaus - Topalihütte 4.5 to 6 hours, depending on the route, and Topalihütte - Barrhorn around 6 hours.
