Anton Dieffenbach (born February 4, 1831 in Wiesbaden , † November 29, 1914 in Hohwald , Vosges ) was a German landscape painter .

Life

Born in Wiesbaden, Dieffenbach came to Strasbourg with his parents in 1840 and became a pupil of the painter Charles Duhamel . With his recommendation he later went to Paris and became a student of the sculptor James Pradier . After his death on June 4, 1852, Dieffenbach returned to Germany and settled in his hometown Wiesbaden. He decided to devote himself only to painting , and in 1853 he went to Düsseldorf , where he studied intermittently, for example in 1856/57 at the art academy in Christian Köhler's painting class and privately with Karl Ferdinand Sohn and Rudolf Jordan . 1856-1859 Dieffenbach was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . Dieffenbach preferred to find his subjects in depictions of family scenes, especially those with children. The painting of Ludwig Knaus had a great influence on Dieffenbach's choice of subjects , without his being his pupil. As a kind of homage, Dieffenbach created the painting A Day Before the Wedding in Paris , which was seen as a counterpart to Knaus' painting The Golden Wedding , but which thematized the preparations for the wedding of young people. The picture was exhibited in Stuttgart and purchased for the King of Württemberg; a replica from 1868 was sold to the USA.

Dieffenbach left Düsseldorf because he was called up for military service; In 1858 he returned to his hometown. In 1863 he settled in Paris and stayed there until the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War drove him out. He went to Switzerland in 1871 , to Berlin in 1872 and finally settled in Strasbourg in 1897. Here he was made an honorary member of the Strasbourg Artists Association. Since 1880 he spent the summer months in Hohwald in the Vosges . In this wooded area he found enough material for studies from nature, some of which he later translated into oil paintings in his studio . Dieffenbach's late work consists almost exclusively of landscapes, with the "forest images" from the Vosges predominating. His pictures are characterized by a successful composition in the picture structure as well as a strong color scheme and play with the moods in the change of the seasons and times of day.

Anton Dieffenbach died on November 29, 1914 at the age of 83 in Hohwald.
