Paul Girardet (born March 8, 1821 in Neuchâtel , † February 28, 1893 in Versailles ) was a French engraver of Swiss origin.

Life

Girardet came from a Swiss Huguenot family and was the son of the engraver Charles Girardet (1780–1863); his brother was the painter and engraver Edouard Girardet (1819–1880). Like his brother, he received his first artistic lessons in Paris from his father; But was only interested in the copperplate engraving, which he perfected with all artistic possibilities.

In 1842 Girardet took part in an exhibition for the first time with four sheets in mezzotint . After this successful debut, he was able to shine with reproductions of well-known pictures over the years. His range spans from simple subjects of genre painting to the political message of battle painting .

He was married to Louise Alexandrine, geb. Sandoz. Her sons Léon , Jules , Eugène , Paul Armand and Théodore and their daughter Julia Antonine also became artists.
