Niels Simonsen (born December 10, 1807 in Copenhagen , † December 11, 1885 in Frederiksberg , Zealand ) was a Danish painter and sculptor .

Life

At the age of 16 Simonsen came to the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1823 . There he first studied painting and later switched to sculpture there. In 1827 he came to Johan Ludvig Lund's (1777–1867) studio as a student . With the support of Lund, Simonsen was soon able to debut as a sculptor at several exhibitions. But since he ultimately failed to achieve an artistic breakthrough in this field and thus also to gain recognition from the public, he soon devoted himself only to painting.

In 1833 Simonsen went to the art academy in Munich . From there he went on several study trips to the Bavarian and Austrian Alps . In 1839 he traveled to the Mediterranean Sea and Algeria and from all his travels he brought back many sketches and impressions, which then formed the basis of many oil paintings in the studio.

In 1845 Simonsen left Munich and returned to Denmark forever. In addition to his work in his own studio, he also worked for many years as a professor at the art school in Stockholm .

Simonsen died one day after his 78th birthday on December 11, 1885 in Frederiksberg, where he also found his final resting place.
