Edouard-Henri Girardet [ ʒiʀaʀˈdɛ ] (born  July 21, 1819 in Neuchâtel , †  March 5, 1880 in Versailles ) was a French painter and engraver from Switzerland .

Edouard Girardet was a member of the Girardet family of artists , he was the son of Charles Girardet , brother of Karl Girardet and Paul Girardet , father of Henri Girardet (1848–1917), Pierre Girardet (1850–1884), Robert Girardet (1851–1900) and Max Girardet (1857-1927).

In 1822 he moved with his family from Le Locle to Paris . From around 1828 he was already involved in wood tailoring. From 1831 he studied at the ornament sculpture class of the Ecole royale gratuite de Dessin et de Mathématiques appliqués aux arts mécaniques . then he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1836 to 1845 he made drawings for the portrait collection Les galeries historiques de Versailles edited by Charles Gavard . At the same time he took painting lessons from his brother Karl. At the end of the 1830s he went to work in Switzerland, during which he did his first of many in the Bernese Oberland in 1839 . other rural genre scenes were painted with great sensitivity. In 1842 he went on a trip to Egypt with his brother Karl. He then returned to Brienz , Switzerland , and married there in 1845. In order to secure the livelihood of his large family, he began producing reproduction engravings for the French publisher Adolphe Goupil from 1855 on the mediation of his brother Karl . In 1857 he moved back to Paris, where he mainly worked as an engraver. a. based on models by Paul Delaroche , Horace Vernet and Jean-Léon Gérôme .

In 1866 he became a Knight of the Legion of Honor . During the war of 1870/71 he lived again in Brienz, then again in France, where he took up painting again. Long trips to Brittany (1876), Italy and North Africa provided him with motifs for numerous studies with landscapes and genre scenes as the basis for paintings.
