  • March 1st : Heinrich Kleyer founds a machine and bicycle business in Frankfurt am Main. The Adlerwerke for the production of bicycles, motorcycles and cars later emerged from Heinrich Kleyer GmbH .
  • In November the brothers William and Theodore Steinway opened another plant in Hamburg- St. Pauli on Schanzenstrasse in a former sewing machine factory in order to take advantage of the Hamburg duty-free and lower wages in piano manufacturing. Arthur von Holwede, who moved from Braunschweig to New York with Theodor Steinweg in 1865, becomes the first Hamburg plant director.
