Hermann Franz Anschütz (born October 12, 1802 in Koblenz , † August 30, 1880 in Munich ) was a German painter .

life and work

As a schoolboy he received his first painting lessons and, as soon as his family was financially able, went to the art academy in Dresden . There he became a student of the history painter Ferdinand Hartmann and Friedrich Matthäi .

In 1822, Anschütz joined Peter von Cornelius at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . As an assistant to Karl Stürmer and Hermann Stilke, he worked on the large fresco The Last Judgment in the Assisensaal in Koblenz. Cornelius finally took him to Munich in 1826, together with his classmates Wilhelm Kaulbach and Adam Eberle, for some major orders . Up until 1827, Anschütz executed one of the three ceiling frescoes in the Odeon Hall there, The Judgment of Midas , which was destroyed in the Second World War. King Ludwig I of Bavaria was enthusiastic and from 1830 to 1831 Anschütz financed a study trip to Naples , where he sketched in the Bourbon Museum (today: National Archaeological Museum) and then also in the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii . After his return, he translated the impressions he gained into frescoes in the royal residence. In 1847 he became a teacher of history painting at the Royal Art Academy in Munich , where he organized painting and drawing lessons together with Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Alexander Strähuber until 1873 . In 1860 he was one of the founding members of the Munich Association for Christian Art .

Anschütz was married to the celebrated pianist Karoline Dulcken in her day. The marriage had several children.
