Alexander Strauber

Alexander Strähuber (born February 28, 1814 in Mondsee , Salzkammergut , † December 31, 1882 in Munich ) was a German history painter . From 1865 to 1882 he was a professor at the Royal Art Academy in Munich .

life and work

Alexander Strähuber was the son of a princely Wrede stable master. At the age of seven he came to Munich with his parents and first attended a grammar school, which he soon left because he was gifted with drawing. In preparation for a career as an artist, he switched to the Polytechnic School founded in 1827 , where he a. a. Received drawing lessons from Joseph Anton Rhomberg and Hermann Joseph Mitterer . In 1829 he enrolled at the Royal Art Academy and became a student of Heinrich Hess and Clemens von Zimmermann and the Nazarene Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . The latter gave him individual orders for the painting of the royal building of the Munich residence . In 1862 Strähuber initially worked as an assistant teacher at the academy, in 1865 he was appointed professor. He taught the class of antiquities with Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Hermann Anschütz . His students included u. a. Wilhelm Leibl , Franz Widnmann , Julian Fałat and Robert Raudner .

In addition to paintings, Strähuber created numerous religious drawings and designs for glass windows, among others. a. for the Max Ainmiller glass painting studio . He also illustrated religious books. In 1879 he was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of St. Michael excellent. In 1860 Strähuber was one of the founding members of the Munich Association for Christian Art , of which he was the first director from 1866 until his death in 1882. In 1947, Strähuberstraße was named after him in the Solln district of Munich .

His sons came from his marriage to Magdalena Stahl, daughter of a royal Bavarian court musician, in 1844
