Clemens von Zimmermann (born November 8, 1788 in Düsseldorf , † January 25, 1869 in Munich ) was a German painter .

life and work

In the autumn of 1804, von Zimmermann came to the Düsseldorf Art Academy as a student and two years later moved to the Royal Art Academy in Munich with his teacher Johann Peter von Langer .

In 1815 Zimmermann was entrusted with the management of the royal art school in Augsburg . In the following year he undertook an extensive study trip to and through Italy with a stay in Rome from 1816 to 1817. In 1825 he was appointed full professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

As an artistic advisor, von Zimmermann was involved in many decisions by the Bavarian King Ludwig I , but also worked as a painter. Together with his colleagues Gottlieb Gassen , Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Eugen Napoleon Neureuther , he decorated the frescoes in the corridor of the Alte Pinakothek based on designs by Peter von Cornelius . This work occupied him for almost ten years.

In 1846 Zimmermann became director of the Königl. Bavarian Central Gallery and held this office until 1865. Then he gradually gave up all offices and retired into private life. Clemens von Zimmermann died on January 25, 1869 in Munich at the age of 80.

Clemens von Zimmermann was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art, founded in 1860 .

His son Julius Zimmermann (1824–1906) also became a painter.
