Portrait of Cimabues from the Vite by Giorgio Vasari

Cimabue (* approx. 1240; † approx. 1302), real name Cenni di Pepo ( nickname Cimabue , Italian = ox head), was a Florentine painter and mosaic artist .

Life

As one of the first painters in Italy, Cimabue broke with the formalism of Byzantine art . His reception of Gothic painting from Northern Europe had a great influence on 14th century painting in Italy. Cimabue was Giotto's teacher .

Giorgio Vasari wrote the first biography of the painter in his Le vite . He described him as proud, tenacious, highly motivated and determined to do what he thought was right, and he was born to give painting the “first lights” (“ i primi lumi ”). From the point of view of art criticism , the fresco of the enthroned Virgin Mary (Maestà) with angels and St. Francis in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi shows the saints in the most authentic representation.
