Pietro Cavallini

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pietro Cavallini (2nd half of the 13th century, † around 1330) was an Italian painter who worked in Rome and Naples at the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th centuries . He made mosaics in the style of the cosmats and in his frescoes he adhered to the Byzantine manner, which was animated by a fresher feeling for nature. In 1308 Cavallini was serving the king in Naples. This is the only documented date of the Vita Cavallinis.

Life

The Last Judgment in Santa Cecilia in Trastevere

Recently, the Italian restorer Bruno Zanardi has expressed his doubts about Giotto's authorship for the famous frescoes in the upper church of the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi . He considers Pietro Cavallini to be the creator of the Francesco frescoes. Zanardi was busy restoring the frescoes for almost ten years.

Cavallini's frescoes in Santa Cecilia in Trastevere were restored in 2001 and are now seen in a new context. The tendency of recent research seems to be that the position of Rome in comparison to Florence and other cities in Tuscany is becoming increasingly important. In many old churches, significant frescoes are found under the plaster. The old claim that Rome was a simple province at that time, around 1300, is increasingly proving to be wrong.
