Rupert Graves (born June 30, 1963 in Weston-super-Mare , Somerset , England ) is a British actor .

life and work

Graves was born in 1963 to Mary Lousilla Graves and Richard Harding. He had a wild youth as a provincial punk and found it difficult to follow the rules. His first job after leaving school was a casual job as a circus clown . At the age of 15 he got a small role in the British cult series Return of the Saint . Shortly thereafter, he played the Yan in an adaptation of Enid Blyton's Five Friends . In 1983 Graves made his acting debut in the theater and in 1985 he received his first minor film role in the hit film Room with a View by James Ivory . This was followed by his second film role in Maurice , for which he is still known today. Graves has since starred in numerous cinema and television productions. He can also be seen quite often at theaters in London and New York . Since 2010 he has played the role of Inspector Lestrade on the BBC television series Sherlock .

Graves is married with five children, three sons and two daughters.
