Death in Paradise is a British - French television series produced for the BBC and France Télévisions since 2011 . The series is the first work by Robert Thorogood, who was discovered in a script competition. It's a mix of comedy, drama and crime. The shooting takes place almost exclusively in the town of Deshaies in the northwestern part of the French Caribbean island of Basse-Terre (Guadeloupe) . The leading roles are currently Ralf Little (since episode 9.05), Aude Legastelois (since episode 8.07), Tobi Bakare (since episode 4.05) and Shyko Amos (since episode 8.02–). In Germany, which has pay TV transmitter FOX secured the premiere broadcasting rights for the series and showed them since May 24, 2012 with the exception of Season 2, the first on ZDFneo was seen. The current 9th season began broadcasting on BBC One on January 9, 2020 .
action
The London investigator Detective Inspector Richard Poole is sent to the (fictional) Caribbean island of Saint Marie to solve the violent crime committed against one of his local colleagues. The dreamlike Caribbean flair is bothering him, however, and so he is anything but satisfied with his new position as chief investigator. As a meticulous suit wearer, he encounters a Caribbean mentality that is completely alien to him, which repeatedly creates entertaining situations.
After Richard Poole himself is murdered at the beginning of the third season, Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman is entrusted with the investigation, who also succeeds Poole. Typical of Goodman is his clumsiness and the fact that he often either does not have a notepad or a pen available to take notes on what happened.
Goodman turns his back on the Caribbean after a case (double episode 6.05 / 6.06) that brings parts of the team to London. He is replaced by Detective Inspector Mooney, who has already supported the team in London in this case. In the last episode of the sixth season, he decides to work permanently on the island. In the ninth season, Detective Inspector Neville Parker takes over.
The other officers of the "Honoré Police Station" are Detective Sergeant Camille Bordey (up to episode 4.04), Detective Sergeant Florence Cassell (episodes 4.01 to 8.06), Detective Sergeant Madeleine Dumas (from episode 8.07), Sergeant Lily Thomson (only episode 1.01), Officer Dwayne Myers (until episode 7.08), Officer (later Sergeant) Fidel Best (until episode 3.08), Officer JP Hooper (from episode 4.05) and Officer Ruby Patterson (from episode 8.02).
The episodes are each about a closed criminal case (with the exception of the double episodes 6.05 and 6.06 as well as 8.05 and 8.06) and are in the tradition of the classic English Whodunit : the eccentric criminalist gathers the suspects at the climax of the plot and presents the always surprising resolution.
production
For France Télévisions it is the first coproduction of a dramedy series with a foreign broadcaster. Since FTV was enthusiastic about the script, they agreed to a partnership with the British BBC . Filming began in Guadeloupe in spring 2011 . Most of the shooting took place in the Deshaies community . Production took 100 days and cost 3.7 million euros.
Less than a month after the last episode of the first season was broadcast, the production of a second season with eight more episodes was officially announced. On February 12, 2013 the production of a third season was announced, which again consisted of eight episodes. Shortly after the renewal, it was announced that Ben Miller was leaving the series for the third season and will be replaced by Kris Marshall , who will play the new Detective Humphrey Goodman . Shortly before the airing of the season finale of the third season, Death in Paradise was extended for a fourth season in February 2014. In late February 2015, the television series received a fifth season. In February 2016, the series was extended by a sixth and in February 2017 by a seventh season. Before the end of the sixth season, it was announced that Kris Marshall is leaving the series and will be replaced by Ardal O'Hanlon . On February 1, 2018, the BBC announced that the 8th season would be broadcast in 2019. Danny John-Jules will no longer be there. He will have his exit at the end of Season 7 without saying goodbye.
The filming took place for months on location in the Caribbean: In several cases in which actors dropped out of the series, they gave family reasons, such as long separations from their families or their children's schooling.
