production
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Jane Austen, which was adapted very closely to the text by Eleanor Catton for the film while largely using the original dialogues of the novel. Autumn de Wilde made her directorial debut with the film.
In October 2018, the cast of Anya Taylor-Joy , who can be seen in the title role of Emma Woodhouse, was announced. British singer and actor Johnny Flynn , who plays George Knightley, followed in December 2018 .
The shooting took place in several places in England instead: in Chavenage House in Tetbury ( Gloucestershire ), in Kingston Bagpuize House & Garden in Oxfordshire , in Wilton House in Salisbury and in Firle Place, Lewes , a house from the time of the novel, which is is still largely in its original condition and was used for the first time in a film.
Autumn de Wilde was able to rely on an experienced team of employees for her debut film. Kave Quinn was responsible for the set design , the costumes were created by costume designer Alexandra Byrne , who has received an Oscar and four other Oscar nominations, and the cameraman in charge was the multiple award-winning Christopher Blauvelt . Film editor Nick Emerson has a. a. already worked with Neil Jordan , Paul McGuigan and William Oldroyd .
Isobel Waller-Bridge composed the film music . Amber Anderson plays the piano sonata in F major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself on a fortepiano . Amber Anderson and Johnny Flynn sing and play the duet "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes" (text by Ben Jonson ), which is very popular in England. The soundtrack album, which comprises a total of 35 pieces of music, was released by Back Lot Music released for download.
A first trailer was presented in November 2019. The film was released in cinemas in the United Kingdom on February 14, 2020. A theatrical release in the USA took place on February 21, 2020
reception
The film has so far won over 87 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.3 out of a possible 10 points.
Caryn James of The Hollywood Reporter speaks of a largely faithful adaptation, which was beautifully staged by Autumn de Wilde and whose cast knows how to balance wit and romance. The period details are extravagant and sometimes overwhelming. Christopher Blauvelt's camera is pretty in itself, from Knightley's house with a huge art gallery to the expansive green landscape, but Kave Quinn's lovely décor can detract from the film's social and romantic themes, James said. Alexandra Byrne's costumes were less noticeable apart from one glaring misstep. Mia Goth make Harriet the most likable and moving character in the film and capture their confusion and uncertainty.
The film critic Antje Wessels writes that Anya Taylor-Joy's alternating performance between aloof, too keen, self-confident, changing performance is simply fun, and she and Goth encourage each other to achieve top performances, from which the latter stands out again. The stressed silliness in the play of all the characters not only shows what kind of outrageous dialogues in films and books of this caliber are sometimes sold as meaningful prose, but above all it shows us the bizarre customs and traditions of high society, says Wessels . Because it is never mean or even cynical, but in an amusing, parodic way, as Yorgos Lanthimos recently managed to do with The Favorite , this film may well have been the godfather for Emma .
The German Film and Media Assessment gave the film the rating of particularly valuable . The reasoning states that De Wilde is staging unusually musically and has recognized that Jane Austen is basically a funny writer. In this way, she turns bizarre characters such as Emma's phlegmatic and hypochondriac father into the film's real popular figures.
The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 25.6 million.
