Alice Larkin (born 1974 in Bury , England ; formerly Alice Bows ) is a British climate scientist. She is a professor at the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research and the University of Manchester .

Life

Larkin studied astrophysics at the University of Leeds , did a PhD in climate modeling from Imperial College, and then worked in science communication. In 2003 she was appointed to the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research in Manchester .

Act

Larkin's research focuses on the conflict between aviation and climate policy . She researches climate-friendly economic systems as well as climate-friendly technologies for shipping and aviation. Together with Kevin Anderson , she criticized in a 2013 appeal that many of the solutions proposed by leading politicians to prevent “ galloping global warming ” will not suffice to cope with the extent of the climate crisis ; in it they called for “radical and immediate degrowth strategies for the United States, the EU and other rich nations”.

Larkin also reports on the negative experiences that climate scientists have meanwhile constantly had to make due to an aggressive scene of climate change deniers. As she once said: “Let's take the offensive tweets we are all exposed to. Twitter is a medium that is very personal and aggressive, because the louder you are, the more attention you get. You don't need death threats to sleep well, a few bad lines are enough. "

In 2015, the University of Manchester named her Scientist of the Year. Her TED talk on Climate Change is Happening, Here's How We Adapt , was named "Best Human Rights Talk of the Year" by City Atlas New Haven in 2015 .
