The University of Leeds (dt. Leeds University ) is a university in Leeds , United Kingdom . With more than 35,000 full-time students enrolled in 2019 and more than 34,000 for 2017/2018, it is the fifth largest university in the country in terms of student numbers. In 2006 it received the second highest number of applications for university places.
history
The Leeds School of Medicine was founded in 1831, followed by the Yorkshire College of Science in 1874, which educated the children of middle-class industrialists and traders and was partially financed by local industry. The Yorkshire College of Science was religiously independent, so not only members of the Church of England could study. As the traditional universities Oxford and Cambridge opened other denominations, the Yorkshire College of Science focused on progressive and hands-on teaching methods and devoted himself alongside the natural sciences and engineering sciences and the classical and modern philology and the history of what a renaming in Yorkshire College triggered. In 1887 Yorkshire College merged with the Leeds School of Medicine.
In 1888, Yorkshire College became part of Victoria University , an association of tertiary education institutions in northern England. Although women had not previously been prevented from studying, they only made up a significant proportion of the students with the creation of appropriate facilities from 1896 onwards. Since the cooperation of the institutions within Victoria University caused problems due to the distances to be bridged, the members became independent after the turn of the century. The University of Leeds was made an independent university by King Edward VII in 1904 .
Todays situation
The number of students was around 32,000 for a long time and has recently increased slightly: in 2005 it was 31,500, 2007> 32,000, 2014/2015 31,030, 2015/2016 31,790, 2016/2017 33,300, 2017/2018 34,420 and in autumn 2019> 35,000. Of the 34,420 students for 2017/2018, 20,795 were registered as female and 13,620 as male. In the 2007/2008 academic year, more than 700 undergraduate courses and 474 postgraduate courses were offered. The university has more than 8,700 employees (2019; 2005: 7,500).
The university is one of the UK's leading research institutions and is a member of the Russell Group . In the Research Assessment Exercise carried out in 2001 to assess the quality of research , the university took seventh place for the number of researchers with top marks and eighth place for researchers. The fields of English , electrical engineering , Italian , food technology , mechanical engineering and urban planning also received top marks .
In the university ranking of The Times Higher Education Supplement , the University of Leeds took in 2006 to 19th place in the United Kingdom, the 50th place in Europe and the 121st place worldwide for Humanities even 55th position worldwide.
location
The campus is one mile north of the city center within easy walking distance of downtown and the Hyde Park and Headingley residential areas . The main entrance and building are on the main road to Otley, known as the A660 . Student residences operated by the university are mainly located on campus, in its immediate vicinity and in Headingley. The more distant dormitories are connected to the campus via bus routes operated by First West Yorkshire , some of which only run during the semester .
In addition to the Leeds campus, the university has a branch in Wakefield . Another outsourced campus in Bretton Hall closed in summer 2007, and the institutes located there moved to the central campus in Leeds.

The 40 hectare campus in Leeds was built in stages from the foundation of the university to the present day; further expansion took place from 2006 to 2008, as a new administration building was built. In addition, there are older terraced houses taken over from the university and a park that was created from a former cemetery.
The main building, the Parkinson Building , with the University Tower clock , was completed in 1951 and can be seen from afar due to its location on a hill. A significant part of the university's buildings were built in the 1970s with a uniform architecture dominated by concrete , including the Roger Stevens Building lecture hall center , which was recognized for its efficient use of space, although the arrangement of the 25 lecture halls was confusing.
The university library has five locations. It has a total of 2.76 million works, plus 0.53 million e-books and over 5 million downloads of electronic journal articles annually. Most of the books are in the Brotherton Library and Edward Boyle Library on the central campus . In addition, more than 9,000 computers are available to students, lecturers and staff .
The student body is organized in the Leeds University Union (LUU), which is independent of the university and has its own building on campus, where it operates a pub , several cafes and bars and a small supermarket , whose profits are used to finance Advisory services for students serve. The LUU also has 225 student clubs and interest groups with meeting rooms available. In addition, Leeds Student publishes a weekly newspaper during the semester and operates radio and television stations with LSRfm.com and LS: TV .
