The University of Dundee ( English University of Dundee , Latin Universitas Dundensis ) was founded in 1881 as a University College and is now the largest university in Dundee in Scotland . The motto of the university is Magnificat anima mea dominum (Latin for my soul praises the Lord ) ( Lk 1.46  EU ). Chancellor i. S. v. Presenter is Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell ( Chancellor [elect] ).

history

The university was initially part of St Andrews University , with which it had difficult relationships at times. In 1954 the college was renamed Queen's College and gained greater independence. On August 1, 1967, the college was finally declared an independent University of Dundee .

Since the University of Dundee became independent from the University of St. Andrews, the "School of Life Science Research" at the University of Dundee was chosen as the department with the greatest influence on molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry in the whole of the UK. In addition, the university won the "Queen's Anniversary Prize" for research results that established minimally invasive surgery (keyhole surgery). The university received this award again in 2005 for its achievements in drug research and development. The university is also home to the "UNESCO Center for Water Law, Policy and Science" as the only one in Great Britain to have a "UNESCO Center of Excellence". In addition, the Art & Design, Medicine, Dentistry and Law faculties score above average in national rankings. In the "University Guide 2010" of the English daily newspaper The Times , the Art & Design department was ranked twelfth out of 76 British universities. The law department was ranked 15th out of 91 British universities. In the previous year, the department came in 9th. In the Complete University Guide ranking, the law department ranks 13th out of 90 UK universities. The medical department was ranked seventh in the Times ranking in 2010. It also ranks seventh in the Complete University Guide. In 2010, the medical department was ranked sixth in the British daily The Guardian. In 2011, the aforementioned department improved to fourth place in the ranking of the same daily newspaper. The dentistry department came in second and seventh in the Guardian's 2010 and 2011 rankings. This strong research environment also led to the university being ranked sixth among the best employers in an international survey by the American science magazine "The Scientist".

As is customary in many British universities, the office of rector is primarily of a representative nature. Accordingly, public figures are often elected. In addition to his official duties, he is responsible for representing the university's student body, who elect him for 3 years.
