The University of Essex is a campus university in Wivenhoe Park on the outskirts of Colchester (oldest documented urban settlement in Great Britain ) in County Essex , about 1 km from Wivenhoe . It is one of the campus universities that emerged in the 1960s ("new universities", such as Warwick or York ) and received its Royal Charter in 1965 . The East 15 Acting School in Loughton has also been part of the university since 2000 . There is also a campus in Southend-on-Sea .

The university is divided into 22 faculties of the humanities, social and economic sciences, natural and engineering sciences. The areas of economics, political science, sociology and the “Human Rights Center” are particularly well-known.

The university is part of the "1994 Group" of newer, research-intensive universities and has a very high proportion of foreign students, almost 40%; only the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London have a higher proportion of foreign students.

The British Household Panel Survey has been carried out at the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) since 1991 .
