The university's original focus was on the natural sciences: in 1952, one of the first computers in Europe was developed here with the All Purpose Electronic X-Ray Computer . Mainly postgraduate courses in the fields of art, human and social sciences are now taking place there. In the mid-1990s, the London Consortium Graduate School was established as a merger of Birkbeck, the Architectural Association, the Institute of Contemporary Arts , the Science Museum and the Tate Gallery . The courses offered are supervised by professors from the university and the Architectural Association as well as curators from the participating museums. Lectures will be held on the university premises as well as the Tate Modern and Tate Britain Gallery. Permanent teachers include Anthony Julius, Tom McCarthy , Colin MacCabe, Laura Mulvey , Steven Connor , Marina Warner , Juliet Mitchell , Stuart Hall (†) , Roger Scruton, Salman Rushdie , Tilda Swinton and Slavoj Žižek .
