The University of Bolton is a university in Bolton , England . It emerged from the Bolton Institute of Higher Education .

history

The forerunners of tertiary educational institutions in Bolton can be traced back to 1824. At that time, an educational institution based on the model of the London Mechanics' Institute was created in Bolton , which established special educational offers in order to provide the local companies in the textile industry with highly qualified workers in the technical field. This Bolton Mechanics Institute developed steadily over the decades, so that artistic studies were soon offered to meet the growing need for experts in the field of design in the textile industry.

After the Second World War , several new educational institutions were founded in Bolton. a. the Bolton College of Art, Bolton Technical College, and Bolton Training College. The Bolton Institute of Technology (BIT), which is affiliated to the Bolton Technical College, also used the premises on Deane Road for the first time, where the university campus is still located today.

The Bolton Institute of Higher Education was founded in 1982 from the merger of the Bolton Institute of Technology and the Bolton College of Education (Technical) , which had previously merged with the Bolton College of Art. In 1990 the Bolton Institute of Higher Education was granted the right to award bachelor's and master's degrees on the basis of traditional courses. In addition, in 1994 the right to offer research-oriented courses ( Ph.D. ) was granted .

In April 2004 the institute was given university status. Then a new name was sought. In addition to the proposed candidates Bolton University , Bolton Institute University , West Pennines University , Bolton Metropolitan University and Bolton Leverhulme University , the University of Bolton finally prevailed as the institution's new title and was announced on September 2, 2004.

The university consists of four faculties and three research areas:

  • School of Business and Creative Technologies (including Bolton Business School and School of Games Computing and Creative Technologies )
  • School of Health and Social Sciences

Research areas:

  • Business, Logistics and Information Systems Research Center
  • Center for Materials Research and Innovation
  • Institute for Educational Cybernetics
