history

Northumbria University's origins lie in three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, founded by John Hunter Rutherford in 1894, the College of Art & Industrial Design, and the Municipal College of Commerce. In 1969 these three institutions were combined to form Newcastle Polytechnic. In 1974 the City of Newcastle College of Education became part of the Polytechnic. The Northern Counties College of Education, which was founded in 1880 under the name Northern Counties College of Cookery and Household Management , was added in 1976 and thus established the institution's Coach Lane Campus. In a final expansion step, the Northumbria College of Health Studies was added to the School of Health, Community and Education Studies in 1995. In the course of the nationwide process in which the Polytechnika was renamed to universities, the institution was given the still officially valid name of University of Northumbria at Newcastle in 1992. Since 2002 the university has been using the name Northumbria University almost exclusively.

University life

Due to the central location of the City Campus, student life mainly takes place in the city center of Newcastle upon Tyne . The city on the river Tyne is best known for its bridges and its numerous galleries and museums such as the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art , which are often used by students thanks to their mostly free admission. In addition, Newcastle has developed into a true party stronghold with numerous pubs, clubs and bars in recent years. The roughly 50,000 students at Northumbria University and neighboring Newcastle University also contribute to this. Northumbria University's Students' Union, or NSU for short, is extremely active. In addition to organizing numerous charitable activities such as collecting donations, the NSU also organizes countless parties. It also runs coffee shops, bars and nightclubs. In 2011 the NSU was named the best student representation in the country.
