The Oxford Brookes University is a public university in Oxford . It is the successor to the Oxford School of Art, which was founded in 1865 ( Oxford Polytechnic from 1970 ) and was given its current name in 1992 in honor of John Henry Brookes , who was one of its rectors . The university currently has around 18,000 students, 78.1% of them in an undergraduate course , 20.3% in a postgraduate course and 1.3% in research.

The institution was listed as the best Modern University (post 1992) in the Sunday Times University Guide for twelve consecutive years . According to the Financial Times listing , it also offers one of the world's most extensive online MBA programs (No. 30) and, according to QS World University Rankings, is one of the best universities in the world in 14 courses. There is also a lively exchange with the University of Oxford , with professors teaching at both universities or students having the opportunity to use the University of Oxford's libraries.

history

The former main entrance (2013)

The forerunner was founded in 1865 as the Oxford School of Art and at that time consisted only of individual rooms in the Taylor Institution , a library at Oxford University . The School of Science was added in 1870 and renamed Oxford City Technical School in 1891 . The later namesake John Henry Brookes became the first rector of the now merged university in 1934.

In 1950 both faculties had already 5,000 students enrolled. In 1956, a new campus sponsored by a local brewery was built and the college was renamed Oxford College of Technology . The university opened its first dormitory in 1960, followed by the move to the eastern district of Headington in 1963.

In 1970 the university was renamed Oxford Polytechnic . In 1976 she took over Lady Spencer-Churchill College in Wheatley, east of Oxford, which was founded in 1965, and in 1992 the Dorset House School of Occupational Therapy , the first British technical school for occupational therapy . In 1992 the university was named Oxford Brookes University in honor of its first rector, John Henry Brookes . In 2000, the university took over Westminster College from Oxford University, which was initially continued as the Westminster Institute of Education and was later completely absorbed into the university.

Renovation and expansion

The main campus of the university has been successively refurbished and expanded since the 2010s. The refurbished Abercrombie Building opened in 2013 and has since included the space for architecture and design. In 2014, the £ 132 million John Henry Brookes Building was completed and won numerous architectural awards, including an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects . In addition to teaching rooms, it also houses the university library , various canteens and restaurants, larger event rooms, sports halls, an auditorium and the premises of the Brookes Union .

In 2015, the university announced a ten-year plan that will invest around £ 13 million a year in renovations and new builds. This also included the opening of the new campus in Swindon in 2016. In 2017, the Oxford Brookes Business School was relocated from Wheatley to Headington, and by 2020 new buildings will also be built on Headington Hill.

Headington Campus

The Headington Campus is located about two kilometers from the city center in Headington , a residential area in east Oxford. It consists of the classroom buildings on Gipsy Lane / Headington Road , neighboring Headington Hill , where the university's student association is based, and the School of Health and Social Care , which is about two kilometers from the main campus in the Marston district. In 2014 the "John Henry Brookes Building" was opened, which has won several British architecture awards.

Wheatley Campus

The Wheatley Campus is located in the village of Wheatley, around eleven kilometers southeast of Oxford city center. The campus houses facilities for computing , communication technology, mechanical engineering, motor sports and mathematics. Due to asbestos in the campus tower, all activities will gradually be relocated to the main campus until this campus will no longer be used from 2021.

Harcourt Hill Campus

Harcourt Hill Campus is four kilometers west of Oxford city center. Courses for education, early childhood education and teacher training take place there, philosophy, communication, media and culture are also taught there.

Swindon Campus

In August 2016, the new Swindon Campus was inaugurated in the west of the city at the Delta Business Park . The main building is called the Joel Joffe Building . University library

The university's library spans five floors in the John Henry Brookes Building . The library staff have their offices on the first floor, where various services for students are offered and reserved books and documents are collected. Various archives and special collections are located in the basement.

College life

Brookes Union

1921 was student representative Oxford Polytechnic Students' Union established, which is one of the oldest in the UK. There are a number of alumni networks that bring together 130,000 alumni from almost 190 countries. In countries with a high number of alumni, a separate alumni association is usually established. One of the largest and best-known networks is the Bacchus Society , founded in 1997 and aimed at graduates from the Oxford School of Hospitality Management. The Bacchus Mentoring Program is operated within this network, linking students with alumni and using the latter as mentors . The Business School Alumni Association now includes 40,000 former students. The Doric Club of the Oxford School of Architecture has existed since 1927 , and there is also an alumni association for real estate management students, the OBREMS ( Oxford Brookes Real Estate Management Society ).

There is also the Brookes Connections network , which brings interdisciplinary students together with experienced alumni.
