John Henry Brookes (born January 31, 1891 in Northampton , † September 29, 1975 in Oxford ) was a British craftsman, artist and educator . He is the namesake of Oxford Brookes University and was the rector of one of its predecessor institutions.

Life

Brookes was the son of Robert Henry Brookes (* 1866) and Annie Watts (* 1869, nee Dykes). He attended primary school in Northampton as well as in Leicester , where his father found a job from 1905. There he also went to the Leicester School of Art and Crafts from 1909 to 1914 and eventually became an art teacher.

Between 1913 and 1916 he learned the craft of silversmithing in summer schools in Chipping Camden and worked alongside as an artist before becoming a teacher at the Oxford City School of Arts , where he later assumed managerial positions. When Oxford City Technical School was acquired, Brookes became its first vice- principal . In 1934, Brooke became the first principal of the newly formed Oxford School of Technology, Art and Commerce .

When the college had 19 properties across the city by 1946 and was accepting more and more students, he developed plans to bring them together on a single campus. Despite lively protests, a campus was finally built in the Headington district , where the main campus of Oxford Brookes University is still located today.

In 1956 Brookes retired but remained as President of the Oxford Photographic Society until 1962 . He died in 1975 after a brief illness at Churchill University Hospital and was cremated on October 3 of the same year .

Aside from his academic activities, Brookes wrote and drew for the local Oxford Times newspaper and participated in books such as Country Corners (1969) and Mid- Oxfordshire Churches (1970). He was also a member and chairman of numerous committees and societies that dealt with urban development and the promotion and support of young people.

Awards
