The Swansea University ( Welsh : Prifysgol Abertawe ) in the city of Swansea in Wales ( UK ) was established in 1920 as the University College of Swansea founded. Following the report of the Haldane Commission, it became the fourth college of the University of Wales to become a university . As a result of structural changes within the University of Wales, it was renamed the University of Wales, Swansea in 1996 . The new name Swansea University was not officially recognized until September 1, 2007, when the University of Wales no longer required membership from its former and now independent universities.

The university is the third largest in Wales in terms of student numbers. The campus is located just outside of the city center on the grounds of Singleton Park, on the coast to the north of Swansea Bay and to the east of the Gower Peninsula . In preparation for possible changes within the University of Wales, Swansea University was given the authority to award diplomas in 2005.

The Welsh Varsity, known as the Welsh version of the Oxbridge event, is held annually by the universities of Cardiff and Swansea.

Administration and structure

In 1920 the university received the Royal Charter and since then, like other universities, has been administered according to their constitution with its statutes and charter .

The council is the board of directors of Swansea University and is supported by the Senate and the court.

  • The council consists of 29 members: chancellor, pro-chancellor, vice-chancellor, treasurer, pro-vice-chancellor, professors and students, representatives of the city council and some lay people. The council is responsible for all activities of the university and has a well-organized committee to exercise all of its rights and tasks.
  • The Senate has 200 members, most of whom are academics. But the Student Union (association of students who take care of certain university affairs) and Athletic Union (Unisport) are represented by representatives. The Senate is chaired by the Vice Chancellor, who is also in charge of the university's academic and administrative management. The Senate is the university's most important academic member and is responsible for teaching and research.
  • The court consists of over 300 members who represent the interests of both local and national institutions of the university. The court meets annually to discuss the annual report and the financial situation of the university as well as the current problems in university education.

accommodation

There are around 3400 places in the student dormitories and can normally accommodate more than 98% of new students looking for accommodation. There are also accommodation options for international postgraduate students.

The university maintains student residences on and off campus as well as in the purpose-built Hendrefoelan Student Village. Further new student residences were completed in 2004 and 2008.

Other accommodations rented by the university are in Brynmill and Uplands, two suburbs of Swansea.

Hendrefoelan Student Village

The Hendrefoelan Student Village can accommodate up to 1644 students. Hendrefoelan is located on a main road about 3.2 km from the campus and borders a forest and green areas.

Student dormitories on campus

The student dormitories on campus can accommodate around 1226 students and offer rooms with a private bathroom or rooms with a bathroom in the corridor. Depending on the choice of accommodation, half or full board is also included. Three of the houses (Caswell, Langland and Oxwich) were completed in 2004 and the older ones (Kilvey, Preseli, Rhossili and Cefn Bryn) have been renovated in recent years. Penmaen and Horton are the two newest dormitories on campus and provide an additional 351 en-suite and self-catering rooms. Many of the rooms have sea or park views.

TY Beck House

Rooms in one of the six large Victorian-style townhouses in the Swansea Uplands, about a mile from the Singleton Campus, are primarily rented to postgraduate students, students with families, or exchange students.

Recent changes

Digital Technium, the UK's most advanced virtual reality cave.

In the last few years some restructuring has taken place and popular courses such as history , English , geography and computer science have been expanded. The Faculty of Sociology , Anthropology and Philosophy, however, had to be closed. The Faculty of Chemistry now only offers master’s degrees and conducts research; a bachelor’s degree can no longer be completed at Swansea University. Aerospace engineering is one of the more recent courses, and another since 2004, in partnership with Cardiff University , Medicine. However, medicine is only accessible to students who have already completed a science bachelor's degree. This four-year course has been recognized by the University of Swansea since 2007.

The International Conference for the Study of Political Thought's West UK Department moved from Exeter to Swansea to the Department of Politics and International Relations in 2006.

In July 2007 the Institute for Life Science (ILS) was opened. It is used by the Faculty of Medicine for research purposes. The ILS is located in a six-story building that is equipped with laboratories and an IBM Blue-C supercomputer and in which offices are made available for new companies. The supercomputer is used for various projects such as the analysis of virus genomes or genetic disease susceptibility, for epidemiological modeling and as a large database of hospitals. With the £ 30 million invested by Swansea University, the Welsh Government, the European Union and the Wales Local Health Authority, ILS expanded in July 2009.

In November 2007 the university announced that it would be working with Navitas to create the International College Wales Swansea (ICWS). This international college offers postgraduate, first year Bachelor, and pre-master programs on campus. The first students were admitted in September 2008.

Boots Center for Innovation

The ILS Building, which houses the Boots Center for Innovation and the IBM Blue C supercomputer.

The Boots Center for Innovation was created in April 2007 as a non-profit partnership between the chemist Boots, Longbow Capital, the University of Swansea and the Welsh Government. The basic idea behind this center is to develop new products and technologies in the health and beauty sector through close cooperation with young companies and independent inventors and perhaps to bring new products to the market for Boots (drugstore).

Campus map

The rapid growth in research requires better facilities and is forcing the university to provide additional workplaces and better infrastructures. The team of consultants commissioned by the university, Actium Consult, had the task of working out possibilities for a ten-year "Estates Strategy" in order to solve the annually increasing number of students and the associated problems. Actium Consult should collect and assess all options worth considering for the university. It became clear that the university will need a lot more space if it wants to meet demand in the future, but for which additional infrastructures will be required. Actium Consult has suggested three ways to solve this space problem:

  1. Demolish and redesign the Fulton and adjoining Union House.
  2. To renovate Fulton House and redevelop the area between Singleton Hospital and the student dormitories.
  3. Consider another location (two possible locations mentioned in the report).
Fulton House, Swansea University.

Actium Consult proposes redeveloping the main areas of the Singleton Campus, but this would cause other problems. The university has to think about additional accommodation for its students. The university is in the process of considering all possibilities and consulting with the employees as well as with other stakeholders of the community in order to find the best possible solution.

In 2008 the University provided the Welsh Government with written evidence that it was "at an advanced stage of discussion" on a new "Innovation Campus" at a second location. The second campus could provide a new home for the faculties of engineering, computer science, telecommunications, economics and law, as well as for numerous research equipment from large and small companies. One suggestion for a possible location would be a 0.40 km² area near Fabian Way in Crymlyn Burrows.

University ranking

After ranking 50th in 2004 and 42nd in 2005, Swansea was ranked 46th out of 109 in the British newspaper The Times in 2008. The University of Swansea won an award in 2005 for the university where students had the best experience with the so-called Times Higher Education Supplement Award. However, the survey was criticized by some on the pretext that the survey was carried out by the Student Panel and that it was self-selective and unscientific. According to the 2006 ranking of Shanghai Jiao Tong University , Swansea is one of the world's best universities, ranking 401 out of 500. In addition, the 2008 Times Higher Education Supplement of World University Rankings placed the University of Swansea in 347th place in the world, up 54 places compared to 2007. The Guardian league tables put Swansea in 83rd place in their table with all institutions.

Library

The Career Service and the IT Service are located in the library. The main library on Singleton Campus has 800,000 books, journals and a variety of electronic resources, including 23,000 electronic journals. There are over 1000 study places, half of which are equipped with computers and the Internet. In 2006 the university received an award for its library.

The library also houses important archival material from documentaries on the mountain farmers of South Wales, some Welsh writings in English and the Richard Burton collection on the life and films of the Welsh actor, donated by Burton's wife, Sally.

The library is open Sunday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Friday to Saturday from 2 a.m. to 8 p.m. In the main study room there is the possibility to buy coffee, the self-service machines offer further catering options.

sport Center

The sports center is located off campus, west of Sketty Lane, near King Edward V Sports Field. It is not only used for university purposes, but can also be used by students for their leisure sports. The National Swimming Pool of Wales, an indoor racing track with six lanes, fitness center, gym, tennis and squash courts and a climbing wall are available. The outdoor area offers a running track with eight lanes and illuminated playing fields for rugby, soccer, lacrosse and cricket. In 2014 the IPC European Athletics Championships were held here.

Radio Xtreme 1431AM

Xtreme Radio is the university radio station run by the students. It was founded in November 1968 under the name Action Radio. Xtreme will be broadcast in various locations on campus, in Swansea on 1431AM and worldwide via the Internet. Varied music, some special programs such as talks and sports news fill the radio program. On November 3rd, 2008, Xtreme Radio celebrated its 40th birthday, making the radio station one of the oldest in Great Britain and the oldest in Wales.

Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (Egypt Center)

The Egypt Center, a museum with Egyptian antiquities, is located in the Taliesin building and is open to the public. The collection includes over 4000 objects, most of which were collected by the pharmacist Sir Henry Wellcome. The university received other pieces from the British Museum, the Royal Museum, national museums and galleries in the Welsh capital, Cardiff, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery and also from private donors.

Employees of the Egypt Center regularly give lectures and lectures for museum guests and other interested parties, on the one hand to arouse interest in museums at universities and on the other hand to promote social inclusion and voluntary work. The museum is also often visited by schools that take part in a lively and thoroughly interactive program of events.
