history

The university was founded in 1909 as the Loughborough Technical Institute . During the First World War, workers for the munitions industry were trained in the institute. After the war, the institute was split into four parts:

  • Loughborough Training College (teacher training)
  • Loughborough College of Art (art and design)
  • Loughborough College of Further Education
  • Loughborough College of Technology (Technology and Science)

In 1966 the fourth part was granted university status. In 1977 the Institute for Teacher Training was included, followed in 1998 by the College of Art. In 1996, the name suffix "Technical" was deleted from the university name. At the beginning of March 2017, Loughborough University was named the best sports university in the world according to the QS ranking.
