Mikael Ingemarsson Odenberg (born December 14, 1953 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish politician of the Moderata samlingspartiet .

Life

Mikael Odenberg did his military service from 1973 to 1974 in the coastal artillery in Gothenburg . His current rank is major. From 1991 to 2007 he was a member of the Swedish parliament and from October 6, 2006 to September 5, 2007 he was Minister of Defense in the Swedish government . As Defense Minister, he spoke out on the one hand in favor of moving Sweden closer to NATO and improving the ability of Swedish soldiers to deploy abroad, and on the other hand he warned of security dangers associated with the Northern European gas pipeline . He suspected that Moscow would abuse the pipeline and its announced protection by the navy for military and industrial espionage.

On September 5, 2007, Odenberg resigned from all political offices after disputes over the defense budget. His successor in the Ministry of Defense was Sten Tolgfors .

Since 2008 he has headed the Swedish transmission system operator Svenska Kraftnät , which triggered criticism from the opposition parties due to a lack of competitors for the post of Director General.

His sister Christina Odenberg was appointed the first female bishop of the Church of Sweden in Lund .
