Nyamko Ana Sabuni (born March 31, 1969 in Bujumbura , Burundi ) is a Swedish politician of the Liberalerna . She was Minister for Gender Equality from 2006 to 2013 (and also for Integration until 2010) and Sweden's first minister of African origin. Career

Sabuni grew up with her family in Burundi, where her father, a political refugee from Zaire , lived in exile. He was granted political asylum in Sweden in 1980, and his family followed him in 1981. There she lived in Kungsängen near Stockholm . She later studied law in Uppsala , migration theory in Eskilstuna and communication studies in Stockholm.

Political career

In 1996 Sabuni joined the youth movement of the People's Party The Liberals . She cited the murder of a refugee by a skinhead in Klippan in 1995 as a key experience that motivated her to get into politics .

Nyamko Sabuni was for the Popular Party in the Swedish 2002 Reichstag voted. In 2006, in the Swedish newspaper Expressen , she asked for an annual gynecological examination for school girls to prevent genital mutilation. She has also advocated a ban on headscarves for all schoolgirls under the age of 15 and the inclusion of honor killings as a special criminal offense in legislation.

In July 2006 her book " Flickorna vi sviker " ("The girls we betray") was published. It is about women who live in Sweden under threat of honor killings and violence .

On October 6, 2006, she became Minister for Integration and Gender Equality in the new government of Fredrik Reinfeldt . Swedish Muslims protested her appointment, accusing her of Islamophobia and populism . The Sveriges muslimska förbund (which it claims to be the largest organization of Swedish Muslims) signed a petition against her appointment.

Language and work are the keys to integration ”, is quoted as her personal credo.

After the 2010 election she gave up her ministerial post for integration and was now only responsible for gender equality.

On January 21, 2013, Sabuni announced her resignation as minister. Her successor was Maria Arnholm .

On June 28, 2019, she was elected chairwoman of the Liberalerna.
