Eva Birgitta Ohlsson (* 20th July 1975 in Linköping , Östergötland , Sweden ) is a Swedish politician of the Liberal Erna and former Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister . From 2010 to 2014 she was Minister for European Union Affairs .

Life

After visiting the Katedralskolan in Linköping, Ohlsson studied political science , international relations and the United Nations at Stockholm University between 1994 and 1997 . During her studies, she was chairwoman of the Association of Liberal Students in Stockholm from 1996 to 1998 and also vice-chairwoman of the Swedish Young European Federalists in 1998 . She then became an editor and freelance journalist for several liberal daily newspapers such as Sundsvalls Tidning , Vestmanlands Läns Tidning , Västerbottens-Kuriren and Dagens Nyheter .

Following this, Birgitta Ohlsson began her political career in 1999 as chairwoman of Liberala ungdomsförbundet , the youth association of the Liberal People's Party. In addition, she has been a board member of the Swedish International Liberal Center since 2001 and was also chairwoman of the Republican Association of Sweden ( Republikanska föreningen ) from 2002 to 2005 , a politically and religiously independent organization that calls for the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic.

In the elections of September 15, 2002 to the Reichstag , she was elected for the first time as a member and has since represented a constituency of Stockholm . Initially she was a deputy member of the Labor Market Committee between 2002 and 2006 and also of the Foreign Affairs Committee from 2002 to 2004 . From 2006 to 2010 she was not only a member of the Foreign Policy Committee, but also the Foreign Policy Spokesperson for the Liberal People's Party.

At the same time she was vice- chairwoman of the Swedish- Israeli Friendship Society from 2003 to 2005 and chairwoman of the Federation of Liberal Women from 2007 to 2010. She has been a member of the Liberalerna board since 2007.

On February 2, 2010, she was appointed Minister for Affairs of the European Union by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and, as such, was also a Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. She was the successor to Cecilia Malmström , who became the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs . In addition to her original duties in the government, Ohlsson was also minister responsible for democracy and consumer policy since October 2010.
