Election result

The election winners were the Social Democrats (S). They were able to maintain their position as the strongest party in parliament and increased their result compared to the previous election by a good 3.5 percentage points to 39.9 percent. On the other hand, the losers in the election were the Conservatives (M). They fell 7.6 percentage points to 15.3 percent.

Government formation

After failed efforts by the Liberal People's Party to bring about a change of power together with the Christian Democrats, the Center and the Greens, as well as support from the Conservatives, the Social Democratic minority government under Prime Minister Göran Persson remained in office with the support of the Left Party and the Greens.
